Why Do Czechs Celebrate Name Days? 🎉

hands holding flowers

If you’ve spent any time in the Czech Republic, you might have noticed that people here don’t just celebrate narozeniny (birthdays), but also something called svátek—a name day! And guess what? Dnes mám svátek já! (Today’s my name day! 🎉)

But what’s the deal with name days, and why do Czechs care so much about them? Let’s dive into this fun tradition!

Svátek: A Birthday’s Chill Younger Sibling

Name days in Czech culture are like a more low-key, less stressful version of a birthday—you don’t have to plan a party, there’s no pressure for a fancy cake, but you still get a bunch of messages, flowers, or maybe even a little chocolate (yes, please!).

The Czech kalendář (calendar) assigns a name (or two) to each day of the year, and if your jméno (name) matches the date, congratulations—it’s your special day! Unlike birthdays, which are personal, svátky are public knowledge. Everyone has your name day in their diary, on their fridge, or at least in their phone—so no excuses for forgetting!

Where Did This Tradition Come From?

Svátek celebrations have deep roots in křesťanství (Christianity), where many names were linked to svatí (saints). Originally, people celebrated their name day to honor their patron saint. But over time, name days became more of a cultural tradition than a religious one.

Nowadays, the official seznam jmen (list of names) is published by the Czech Academy of Sciences, and if your name is included—lucky you! If it’s not? Well, you might have to pick the closest match or, you know, start a petition. 😅

How Do Czechs Celebrate Svátky?

Celebrating a svátek is simple, yet sweet. Here’s what usually happens:

While birthdays are still the big deal, svátky are often remembered by more people (because they’re printed in every calendar!). Some Czechs even joke that their svátek gets them more attention than their actual birthday. And honestly? They might not be wrong. 😄

🎉 Všechno nejlepší k svátku! – Expect a flood of messages from friends, family, colleagues, and even that one teta (aunt) you haven’t seen in ages.
💐 Kytičky a čokoláda – Flowers, chocolates, or a bottle of víno (wine) are standard gifts. Nothing over the top, but a nice little treat.
🧁 Drobné pohoštění – If you’re at work or school, sluší se (it’s polite) to bring some sušenky (cookies) or a small snack to share.
🍻 Setkání s přáteli – Some people invite friends for coffee, pivo (beer), or a casual dinner—though it’s not a must.

Svátek vs. Narozeniny: Which Is More Important?

While birthdays are still the big deal, svátky are often remembered by more people (because they’re printed in every calendar!). Some Czechs even joke that their svátek gets them more attention than their actual birthday. And honestly? They might not be wrong. 😄

Can Non-Czechs Celebrate Name Days?

Absolutely! If your name isn’t on the list, just pick a date that matches best. Many foreigners living in Czechia join in on the fun, because who doesn’t love an extra excuse to celebrate? 🎉

Tak všechno nejlepší! 🥂

So now you know why svátky are such a big thing here. And since today is my name day—všechno nejlepší k svátku, Ellen! 😆 If you know someone named Ellen (or anyone else with a name day today like Elena), send them a quick message. It’s a small gesture, but guaranteed to make their day.

Pa pa! 💐
