How to Emphasize (dramatize) in Czech: Hrozně, Strašně, Děsně, Pěkně and More! ⚡

Do you ever feel like your Czech sounds a bit… flat? Maybe you’re saying things correctly, but they lack that native speaker drama? 🎭 Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

In this post, we’re diving into the wonderful world of Czech intensifiers—those little words that make everything sound stronger, more dramatic, and a whole lot more fluent.

1. Hrozně, Strašně, Děsně – When “Terrible” Means “Great”

Let’s start with three words that technically mean something awful:

  • Hrozně (terribly, horribly) 😔
  • Strašně (dreadfully, frightfully) 😱
  • Děsně (awfully, horrifically) 😳

But here’s the twist—Czechs love using these words to mean very or really. You can say something is hrozně špatné (really bad), but you can also say hrozně dobré (really good). Sounds weird? Oh, come on, like you weren’t expecting that from Czech already! 🇨🇿

❎ Negative meaning (as expected):

  • Je hrozně unavený. → He’s terribly tired.
  • Bylo to strašně drahé! → It was terribly expensive!
  • Měla jsem děsně špatný den. → I had an awfully bad day.

✅ Positive meaning (unexpected but … normal):

  • Ten dort je hrozně dobrý! → This cake is terribly good! (Wait, what?)
  • Byl to strašně hezký večer. → It was a dreadfully nice evening. (Sounds like it was a blast!)
  • Máš děsně krásné šaty! → You have an awfully beautiful dress! 👗

2. Pěkně – When “Nicely” Means “A Lot”

This word might seem harmless (pěkně = nicely), but don’t let it fool you. It can also be used for exaggeration.

✅ Examples:

  • Bylo to pěkně těžké! → That was pretty tough!
  • To je pěkně vysoko. → That’s pretty high up.

3. Fakt, Opravdu, Moc – The All-Purpose Intensifiers 📈

If all these exaggerated “terrible” words scare you, don’t worry! You can also use these more neutral intensifiers:

  • Fakt = really (Fakt dobrý film! → Really good movie! And that’s a fact! 😎)
  • Opravdu = truly (Opravdu zajímavé. → Truly interesting.)
  • Moc = a lot (Moc se mi to líbí! → I like it a lot!)

These are safer choices, but let’s be honest—hrozně moc (terribly a lot) is way more fun.

4. Bonus: Mix and Match for Maximum Czech-ness 🧩

Czechs love doubling up intensifiers for extra effect. Here are some creative combos:

  • To je fakt strašně dobré! → That’s really terribly good!
  • Byl děsně moc unavený. → He was awfully very tired.
  • Je to hrozně moc těžké! → It’s terribly really hard!

Are these phrases over the top? Absolutely. But will you sound more Czech? Opravdu hrozně moc!
