Mít rád, rád, být rád – the Czech triple that makes you sound instantly more natural.
🧠 The Big Rule of Thumb:
- mít rád/a/i + noun = to like something or someone
- rád/a/i + CONJUGATED verb = to enjoy doing something
- být rád/a/i = to be glad / happy / thankful about something
Think of them as three siblings:
- Mít rád is the steady one (likes coffee, dogs, music 🎶)
- Rád is the active one (loves reading, dancing, skiing ⛷️)
- Být rád is the emotional one (so glad you came 🥹)
☕ Mít rád — “I like stuff”
This is your go-to when talking about things, people, animals. You should always use a noun with this one.
🔁 A few tasty examples:
- Mám ráda kávu. = I like coffee.
- Oni mají rádi psy. = They like dogs.
- Máte rádi karaoke? = Do you like karaoke?
- Štěňata mají ráda hračky. = Puppies like toys (of course they do 🐶).
💃 Rád — “I like doing stuff”
Here rád attaches to a verb to show you enjoy the activity.
🔁 Fun examples:
- Rád čtu. = I like reading.
- Ona ráda zpívá. = She likes singing. (and hopefully does it well!)
- Lyžuješ rád? = Do you like skiing? (or just the après-ski? 🍷)
⚡ Tip: Rád wants to stick to the verb’s side like glue: rád zpívám. If you say zpívám rád, it works, but it sounds more like “I don’t hate singing, okay!?” It’s an emphasis.
🥹 Být rád — “I’m so glad!”
This one is about feelings, gratitude, relief – not hobbies.
🔁 Heartwarming examples:
- Jsem rád, že jsi přišel. = I’m glad you came.
- Byla ráda, že to stihla. = She was happy she made it in time.
- Budeme rádi, když nás navštívíte. = We’ll be glad if you visit us.
So emotional, so Czech, right?🤗
