In 1989, a student march in Prague was met with force, and that shock sparked days of peaceful protests. People began <strong>jingling their keys<\/strong> &#8211; a gentle, ringing way of saying <em>\u201ctime to unlock the future.\u201d<\/em> \ud83d\udd11<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A quick rewind: 1939 \u2192 1989<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The date isn\u2019t random. On <strong>17 November 1939<\/strong>, after the funeral of student <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Jan Opletal<\/mark><\/strong>, the Nazi regime brutally crushed Czech student protests: universities were closed, student leaders were executed, and over a thousand students were sent to concentration camps. The exile community later marked <strong>17 November<\/strong> as <strong>International Students\u2019 Day<\/strong>. Half a century on, Czech students chose the same date to honor their predecessors &#8211; and to say <em>never again<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17 November 1989, hour by hour(ish)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students began with a permitted memorial gathering at <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Albertov<\/mark><\/strong>, then moved toward <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">N\u00e1rodn\u00ed t\u0159\u00edda<\/mark><\/strong>. What started as remembrance swelled into a peaceful march for change. Police kettled the crowd and used batons; the images and eyewitness stories, plus a rumored death, ignited public outrage. Within forty-eight hours, theaters went on strike, artists spoke out, and people across the country were buzzing with the same question: <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>\u201cCo bude d\u00e1l?\u201d<\/strong><\/mark><\/em> &#8211; <em>What will happen next?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened next (fast!)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-c9e43d97 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-5528f2d1\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Civic groups unified under <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Ob\u010dansk\u00e9 f\u00f3rum<\/mark><\/strong> (Civic Forum), mass rallies filled <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed<\/mark><\/strong>, and the <strong>general strike on 27 November<\/strong> showed how broad the support had become. By early December, censorship began to crumble; by late December, <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">V\u00e1clav Havel<\/mark><\/strong>, a former political prisoner and playwright, was elected president.
