It\u2019s not a strike &#8211; it\u2019s <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Den vzniku samostatn\u00e9ho \u010deskoslovensk\u00e9ho st\u00e1tu<\/mark><\/strong>, the <strong>Day of the Establishment of an Independent Czechoslovakia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, this is the day when Czechs and Slovaks officially said:<br><strong>\u201cDear Austria-Hungary, it\u2019s not me, it\u2019s you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf96\ufe0f What Are We Actually Celebrating?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-ddb1ef83 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-2aeca41b\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">On <strong>28th October 1918<\/strong>, after<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"> prvn\u00ed sv\u011btov\u00e1 v\u00e1lka <\/mark>(World War I), the <strong>Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart<\/strong>. And like many breakups, it was complicated, emotional\u2026 and ended with new flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Czech politicians &#8211; especially <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Tom\u00e1\u0161 Garrigue Masaryk<\/mark><\/strong> <em>(remember him!)<\/em>, <strong>Edvard Bene\u0161,<\/strong> and <strong>Milan Rastislav \u0160tef\u00e1nik<\/strong> &#8211; said <em>\u201cthat&#8217;s enough\u201d<\/em> and declared an <strong>independent state: <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">\u010ceskoslovensko <\/mark><\/strong>(Czechoslovakia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Fun fact:<br>Masaryk was elected <strong>the first president<\/strong>. He had a cool moustache, an American wife (Charlotte Garrigue), and rode a horse like a boss. What was inside?<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expats.cz\/czech-news\/article\/people-like-to-be-stupid-masaryk-s-final-letter-resonates-90-years-later\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Check it out<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc40 But Was It That Simple?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not really. Czechs didn\u2019t just wake up free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The declaration was printed secretly on <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Na P\u0159\u00edkop\u011b<\/mark> Street in Prague<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People ripped down imperial symbols and put up Czech tricolours instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The empire said \u201cWait, what?\u201d but by then it was too late &#8211; <em>we had the<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"> <strong>vlajka<\/strong><\/mark> (flag), the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">hymna<\/mark><\/strong> (anthem) and the enthusiasm<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And boom &#8211; <strong>Czechoslovakia was born.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf89 What Happens on 28th October Today?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from everyone sleeping in and complaining that Albert is closed, here\u2019s what actually happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udff0 <strong>1. Ceremony at Prague Castle (Pra\u017esk\u00fd hrad)<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president hands out <strong>state awards<\/strong> to scientists, actors, war heroes, and occasionally someone who did something legendary in hockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f <strong>2. Dny otev\u0159en\u00fdch dve\u0159\u00ed \u2013 Open Doors Day<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Places that are <em>normally locked tighter than Czech grammar rules<\/em> suddenly open for the public. The famous concert \u201cM\u00e1 vlast\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>My favourite!!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year on this day, the <strong>Prague Symphony Orchestra (FOK)<\/strong> performs <strong>Smetana\u2019s \u201c<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">M\u00e1 vlast<\/mark>\u201d<\/strong> in the breathtaking <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Smetanova s\u00ed\u0148<\/mark> in <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Obecn\u00ed d\u016fm<\/mark><\/strong>.
