It\u2019s not another lockdown. It\u2019s<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"> <strong>Den \u010desk\u00e9 st\u00e1tnosti<\/strong><\/mark> (<strong>Czech Statehood Day<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc51 So Who\u2019s the Star of the Day? Svat\u00fd V\u00e1clav!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This day celebrates <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Svat\u00fd V\u00e1clav<\/mark><\/strong> (Saint Wenceslas), one of the most famous members of the P\u0159emyslovci <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P%C5%99emyslid_dynasty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#00d084\" class=\"has-inline-color\">P\u0159emyslid<\/mark><\/strong><\/a><em> &#8211; I had no idea the name was spelled like this in English, you learn something new every day, huh?)<\/em> dynasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here\u2019s something students often ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWho ruled the P\u0159emyslids before they were a royal family? Who was above them?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Nobody ruled above them.<\/strong><br>Before they became kings, the P\u0159emyslids already ruled the Czech lands \u2014 but as <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">kn\u00ed\u017eata<\/mark> <\/strong>(dukes), not as royalty. The country was called the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">\u010cesk\u00e9 kn\u00ed\u017eectv\u00ed<\/mark> (Duchy of Bohemia), not a kingdom yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first real (historically confirmed) ruler was<strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Kn\u00ed\u017ee<\/mark> <\/strong>(duke)<strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">Bo\u0159ivoj I<\/mark> (around 870 AD).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>1085<\/strong>, Vratislav II became the first Czech ruler to be granted the title of<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"> <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">kr\u00e1l<\/mark> <\/strong>(king) &#8211; but only <strong>for his lifetime<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only in <strong>1198<\/strong>, under <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">P\u0159emysl Otakar I<\/mark><\/strong>, did the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>P\u0159emyslovci <\/strong><\/mark><em>(I don&#8217;t like the &#8220;P\u0159emyslid&#8221; translation, sorry) <\/em>receive a <strong>hereditary royal title<\/strong>, officially becoming a true <strong>kingdom and royal dynasty<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So \u2013 they were in charge all along, just with fewer crowns and more political stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf93 <strong>Do you speak advanced Czech? He focused on building peace, supporting churches, and keeping the Germans friendly rather than angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">His brother <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boleslaus_I,_Duke_of_Bohemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#00d084\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Boleslav<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>? Yeah\u2026 let\u2019s say he preferred <strong>Game of Thrones leadership<\/strong>. Less praying, more <em>\u201csolve it with an axe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">So one day, Boleslav invites V\u00e1clav to a nice family celebration \u2014 like, \u201cCome over, brother, we\u2019ll have some mead, maybe roast a goose.\u201d Very wholesome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except\u2026 not.<br>As V\u00e1clav arrived at the church in <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>Star\u00e1 Boleslav<\/strong> <\/mark><em>(a beautiful city called &#8220;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=i&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tipynavylet.cz%2Fclanek%2Fbrandys-nad-labem-stara-boleslav%2F&amp;psig=AOvVaw25gYQhIDvSv4TliResHuq2&amp;ust=1761043050632000&amp;source=images&amp;cd=vfe&amp;opi=89978449&amp;ved=0CBgQjhxqFwoTCJD-mOLKspADFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#00d084\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Brand\u00fds nad Labem-Star\u00e1 Boleslav<\/mark><\/a>&#8221; now<em>, I recommend visiting it)<\/em> for morning mass, Boleslav and his buddies were waiting. Instead of hugs and <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">kol\u00e1\u010de<\/mark>, he got <strong>stabbed to death at the church doors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medieval HR would call this: <em>\u201cDisagreement within upper management.\u201d<\/em><br>Psychologists would call it: <strong>fratricide with light religious overtones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But somehow, through this dramatic family mess, V\u00e1clav became a <strong>symbol of Czech statehood, faith, and peaceful leadership<\/strong> &#8211; while Boleslav got the nickname <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">&#8220;<strong>Ukrutn\u00fd<\/strong>&#8220;<\/mark> (the Cruel).<br>(He did, to be fair, make the Czech state stronger\u2026 just with more blood and fewer prayers.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc49 Why It Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">28th September is not just about an old duke.
