That’s what it was like in Great Moravia in the 9th century – until two clever brothers, Cyril a Metoděj, changed everything.

These two weren’t just your average monks. Nope, they were superstars of their time. Sent from Byzantium (today’s Greece) in 863, their mission was to help the Slavic people understand Christianity in their own language. But there was a problem: no one had ever written down Old Slavic before.

So what did they do? Invent an alphabet, of course.

✍️ Say hello to Hlaholice

Cyril came up with a brand-new script called Hlaholice (Glagolitic). It looked very artsy – kind of like mysterious runes – and was the first step in giving Slavic people their own written word. Later, Cyril’s students simplified it into what we know today as the Cyrillic alphabet (yep, it’s named after him!).

Thanks to Cyril and Metoděj, the Slavs could finally read the Bible in their own language, which was a game-changer for spreading literacy and culture.

🌿 Discover Czech Folklore Like Never Before

Step into Czech legends, fairy tales, and old traditions – and improve your Czech along the way.🧚‍♀️ Listen.
