For a nation famous for being one of the least religious in the world, we Czechs sure love sprinkling their everyday speech with holy references. Why is that? Let’s dive in!

✨ Want a quick taste of this holy language?

You can also check out my YouTube short inspired by this topic! With around 72% of the population identifying as non-religious, it’s easy to assume that religious influence would be minimal. Yet, history has a funny way of leaving its mark, especially on language.

Heavenly Words Stuck in Everyday Czech ✨🗣️

Even though religion has faded from daily life for many Czechs, language preserves the past. These expressions have lost their religious weight over time and are now just part of everyday slang.

Here are some divine (and devilish) examples:

To je boží! – That’s divine! Even though many Czechs have moved away from religious practice, language often outlives belief. These phrases have become secular exclamations, used more for flavor than faith.

Modern Usage: Less Faith, More Fun 😄

Today, using these expressions doesn’t mean you’re religious; it just means you’re speaking Czech like a local.
