So, if you ever find yourself wandering near a Czech <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>rybn\u00edk<\/strong><\/mark> (pond) \ud83d\udca6 or ignoring your <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>maminka\u2019s<\/strong><\/mark> (mom\u2019s) warning to be quiet at noon, you might just run into one of these creatures. Good luck! \u2728<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:11px\">I\u2019m using the hauntingly beautiful illustrations by the talented <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hanschild.com\/digitalpaint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Hanschild<\/a><\/strong>, whose art brings these legends to life (or&#8230; afterlife \ud83d\udc7b).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Rusalka \u2013 The Water Nymph Who Won\u2019t Let You Go<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\ud83e\udddc\u200d\u2640\ufe0f Rusalka may sound like a pretty <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>mo\u0159sk\u00e1 panna<\/strong><\/mark> (mermaid), but she\u2019s actually a vengeful water spirit who lures people into lakes and rivers\u2014permanently. Think less Disney\u2019s Ariel, more \u201cWelcome to your watery grave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\ud83d\udc80 How she gets you: She sits by the water, looking sad and mysterious. You, being the helpful person you are, get closer. Bad idea. One <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">\u0161plouch<\/mark><\/strong>! (splash!) later, and you&#8217;re done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83c\udfad Fun fact: Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s opera Rusalka made her famous worldwide! Yes, teacups. Czechs take their tea game very seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2615 How he gets you: You go for a swim. Suddenly, you feel something pull your leg. That\u2019s not a fish\u2014it\u2019s Vodn\u00edk dragging you under. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 Survival tip: Avoid swimming in sketchy-looking rybn\u00edky at dusk. You help her, and the next thing you know, she\u2019s leading you deeper into the forest, where your soul will be devoured in exchange for eternal misery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 Survival tip: Don\u2019t trust strangers with too much charm, especially in the forest. And always take a map.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Advice: Stay Dry, Stay Quiet, and Avoid Teacups<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Czech folklore is full of <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">p\u0159\u00ed\u0161ery<\/mark><\/strong> (monsters) who all seem to have one thing in common\u2014they really don\u2019t like people.
