It\u2019s said that on the night of April 30th, witches gathered for their last <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">\u010darod\u011bjn\u00e1<\/mark><\/em> (witchy) celebration before the arrival of spring. To drive away <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">zl\u00e9 duchy<\/mark><\/em> (evil spirits) and the cold, people lit huge bonfires, turning their backs on the harsh winter and welcoming the warmth of <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">jaro<\/mark><\/em> (spring).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to today, and it\u2019s less about banishing witches and more about gathering around <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">velk\u00fd ohe\u0148<\/mark><\/em> (a big fire), enjoying the company of friends, and roasting <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">bu\u0159ty<\/mark><\/em> over the flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don\u2019t get confused! The \u201cwitch\u201d being burned is actually just a <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color:#000000;\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">slam\u011bn\u00e1<\/mark><\/em><em> panenka<\/em> (straw doll).
